Tips for healthy gums

Healthy gums are an essential feature of good oral hygiene. But how do you ensure your gums are healthy? The most basic measure to oral hygiene is brushing your teeth, at least twice a day, using fluoride toothpaste. This removes the plaque that accumulates along the gum lining after you eat some food. The plaque provides a conducive environment for growth of bacteria thus endangering your gums and teeth. Brushing of teeth should also be done right and thoroughly. You should use a soft bristled tooth brush to avoid inflicting injuries to the gums. The tongue should also be scrubbed as it can also harbor the harmful bacteria. The toothbrush should also be replaced regularly with a new one, preferably after 3-4 months or after bacterial infections of the mouth. The toothbrush is a perfect breeding zone for bacteria and as such regular disposal is important to ensure good oral hygiene. It should also not be stored in a small enclosed space but rather an open space that hinders growth of bacteria.

Flossing your teeth regularly as a method of prevention is also an important step to healthy gums. It removes particles and plaque that may not have been removed through brushing our teeth. Just as with the brushing of teeth, great care should be taken to ensure that no damage is inflicted on your gums. Any cuts to the gums means the bacteria get a head start for it is an ideal environment for multiplication.

Another way of countering growth of bacteria along the gum lining is through use of antiseptic mouthwash. A few gargles with an antiseptic mouthwash improves your overall oral hygiene for it squeezes through the thinnest gaps of your teeth hence ensuring bacteria hiding therein is dealt with. This protects the gums that are prone to bacterial infections.

Checking on what we eat can also ensure protection of your gums. You should avoid taking too much sugary foods, especially sticky ones. The sticky sugar creates an ideal environment for growth of bacteria while at the same time evades the toothbrush. This is because the sugar is actually a delicacy for the bacteria too! It is always advisable that you brush your teeth immediately after taking products such as sugary sweets and chocolates to protect your gums from harmful bacteria thus ensuring healthier gums.

Consequently, you should take calcium rich foods such as milk and yogurt to boost the strength of your teeth and gums. Calcium is an essential mineral in the strengthening of your teeth which eventually means healthier gums for you.

The safest way to healthier gums is to always visit a dentist regularly for checkups and when you notice any health issues with your gums or teeth. The dentist can detect any signs of gum disease and recommend the right medication for the same. It is recommended that you visit a dentist at least once every 5 months for checkups. You should also be aware of the signs or symptoms of gum infections so as to easily detect abnormalities. This will guarantee healthy gums and eventually good oral hygiene.
